GPS Mapping Just the Beginning When it comes to Trucking Software

Article by Tom Gruich

GPS, technically the global positioning system, has been in use for years in navigation devices designed for automobiles, ships, tanks, airplanes and trucks. No matter how large or how small your fleet, the latest trucking software coupled with RFID and GPS technologies can reduce your costs and help your company reach its goals.

If your fleet does not have a navigational system already installed, then your drivers must still be using paper maps or relying on their memory to find their destinations. With the current speed limits, it is impossible to safely look at a paper map while driving. It's really not a safe thing to do at any speed.

With the speed at which the roadways are changing these days, paper maps are more inaccurate than ever. GPS navigation systems may be unaware of construction or traffic jams, but they can quickly come up with an alternative route, in most cases. Your trucks or your drivers may already be making use of some RFID technology. Radio frequency identification (RFID) tags are being used to pay tolls and complete other transactions.

The pallets on your trucks may have RFID tags. The US Department of Defense and some large retailers are now requiring their vendors to tag all of their pallet items with these ID tags. It makes it easier for the recipient to receive the items into their inventories.

The latest trucking software allows you to find a vehicle's location from the comfort of your desk. Systems can be put in place to keep track of the vehicle's mileage and maintenance records. Small things, like individual tire pressures, can be read from the cab of the vehicle or a computer terminal, using the technology available today.

If your company is not making use of the latest trucking software, then you are wasting time and money. If your business is transporting items, time is money. The longer it takes a vehicle to reach its destination, the more it costs your company in the long run.

GPS mapping, alone, can help your drivers reach their destinations quickly and safely.

By making use of other technologies available today, you can even make your fleet more fuel efficient. You can also ensure that your drivers do not exceed the posted speed limits and that they are burning diesel or other fuels at the most efficient level possible.

All of these things are possible with today's trucking software. GPS was just the beginning.
